ExCEL Math Grant Lessons

Grade 5

Chapter 1:

Art, Geometry, and Number Theory - Use patterns suggested by number theory to generate an art project. To review divisibility rules to determine prime/composite numbers


Chapter 2:

Fractions and Units - Learn to represent the whole, knowing a fraction of it. Learn to represent the whole as the union of (possibly different) fractions

Thinking Fractionally - Provide a foundation for the complexity of fractions by helping students to become comfortable with the interpretation and manipulation of fractions


Chapter 5:

Big-Little-Little - Solving equations

It's Only An Expression! - To use variables and expressions in order to describe and solve mathematical problems. To gain an appreciation for the power of algebraic representation for providing the language, rules, and tools to address an infinite number of individual problem situations (algebra as generalized arithmetic)

Picture Proofs - To provide concrete representations as motivation for abstract algebra


Chapter 10:

Singapore Math - Understand proportions and apply to problems involving multiplication and division of fractions


Chapter 16:

How Far? How Fast? - To gather and plot data and interpret graphical relationships; to describe relationships using a variety of representations, including mathematical language (Sequence Cards)

Math Olympics - In a game tournament (similar to the Olympics), we will collect data, organize them, and analyze them by presenting their statistics (averages, medians, mode, and range). Next, we will make predictions based on the data


Chapter 25:

Movable Foldables - This activity provides a dynamic hand-made manipulative designed to help students to understand addition with positive and negative integers


Chapter 28:

Photos and Functions - To interpret an equation, practice solving a real life problem with the use of a function table, and create a graph on a coordinate plane. To identify mathematical relationships in the students' environment and share them with others using technology. To describe relationships using a variety of representations, including mathematical language. To engage students in a real world "Treasure Hunt" of mathematical relationships
