Pre-Algebra

Chapter 1:

Border Lesson - To move beyond a particular solution by generalizing to other situations. Concrete examples provide meaning to variable representations. Illustrates different approaches to solving problems

Equation Chain (Keynote zip file) - Students learn to solve one-step equations using all four operations

Jeopardy! (PowerPoint zip file) - Learn to participate as a class in reviewing introductory algebra concepts through a fun interactive game

 

Chapter 2:

Venn Diagrams (LCM/GCF) - Students use a Venn diagram to find LCM and GCF of two numbers. Explore the many uses of Venn Diagrams such as for teaching GCF and LCM, adding/subtracting fractions (Keynote zip file)

Factor Captor (PowerPoint zip file) - Students will be able to list all of the factors of a number and find all of the common factors of any two given numbers

 

Chapter 3:

Properties of Numbers - Learn number properties to include commutative property of addition/multiplication, associative property of addition/multiplication, Identity of addition/ multiplication, inverse of addition/ multiplication

Algebra Football (PowerPoint zip file) - Students will be able to use the properties of numbers in order to solve equations & inequalities

Chapter 4:

Speedway (PowerPoint zip file)- Students will be able to understand and use the rules of exponents

Chapter 5:

Dimensional Analysis - Learn the method of carefully dealing with Unit or Dimensional Analysis in order to produce correct answers to real-world problems. Students will gain understanding of the importance and usefulness of units in solving problems

 

Chapter 6:

Singapore Math - To write and solve fractional word problems by using a horizontal bar as a visual tool

Chapter 7:

Bottle Lesson - Students learn how to sketch a graph of a real-world event and describe the situation the graph represents. Students plot data points and connect them with a line. Students will gain better understanding of linear and non linear relationships

Stacking Cups - To develop both intuitive and formal understanding of linear relationships

Walking a Graph - To make sense out of distance vs. time graphs by moving an object according to graphical information

 

Chapter 8:

Tessellations - To provide a math-art lesson (with emphasis on mathematics) that illustrates the connection between math and art while providing a visual example of transformations, perimeter, and area

 

Chapter 11:

Cup Fall (Keynote zip file)- Learn about probabilities through experimentation. Students will gain knowledge of probabilities and statistics
